FMP: Rough Edit + Trailer Feedback
Today my producer and I had a tutorial and talked in detail about some of the feedback we gained previously on our rough edit and showed our trailer.
Here’s what was said:
- It needs to be framed in some way so that the audience know the relationship between the film maker and the contributor.
- Adding this will help the film have a beginning and an ending.
- The length needs to be cut down 10 mins max, it drags a little.
- There are too many repetitive shots.
- Cannot call it an experimental film, more expressive or unconventional.
In this meeting we pointed out that we have now cut down the length to 10 and a half minutes and still working on it, and some of the repetitive shots have been taken out. We also discussed that although the film itself may not be experimental, it went through and experimental process where the audio was chopped up and placed at random, and agreed that we would call it an unconventional film based on an experimental process rather than an experimental film.
We are still deciding whether or not it needs more of my voice in there or not or whether what is in there is enough. There are a few things my producer and I don’t agree with in regards to some of the feedback and will have to discuss this further and show the edit to some more people in order to gain a little more perspective, but for the moment our editor is hard at work trying to rectify some of the issues we have spotted already.
For our trailer all that could be said was that it was too long, and we all agreed on this, however, this is the length that it has to be to be eligible to be shown at the degree show.
Getting feedback is a great thing as this helps you to progress and better yourself, although sometimes it can feel like a knock back and really deflate you, but the key thing is to remember that it isn’t personal against you, the person who is giving you the feedback is only trying to help push you further and make you think, and above all it is an opinion, one that may not be shared by all.
