A304MC Pass it on – Mentoring 2

Unfortunately this week I missed the second mentoring session, however, I have managed to catch up through Moodle and from talking to peers about what went on.

This session was about the skills and qualities of a mentor, the benefits of mentoring and any boundary issues.

First a few definitions of Mentor;

“Mentors are people who, through their action and work help others to achieve their potential”
(Shea, G.F. Mentoring; a guide to basics 1992)

“Behind every successful person, there is one elementary truth; somewhere, somehow, someone cared about their growth and development. This person was their mentor.
(Kaye, B L, Up is Not the Only Way)

Mentoring is ” a process that supports and encourages learning to happen”
(Parsloe & Wray, Coaching and Mentoring 2000)

It is a unique type of learning relationship.

It is voluntary and is concerned with enabling the learner rather than teaching them

It involves trust, honesty,openness,

It is always about a POSITIVE view of the world, recognising strengths and celebrating achievements

It develops the mentor as well as the mentee

In order for us ourselves to understand what a mentor is we have to rate these of importance:

A FRIEND 5 A PROBLEM SOLVER 9
SOMEONE WHO STAYS NEUTRAL 10 AN ADVISOR 10
A ROLE MODEL 9 A TEACHER 6
A COUNSELLOR 6 AN ADVOCATE 4
A CONFIDANTE 6 A FRIENDLY EAR 7

This was based on feedback given from the class as a result of Task 1:

HOPES FEARS
 Better knowledge  Absences
 Gain experience  Shy people
 Add to contacts  Back chat
Working with new/different people  Not knowing enough
 Build confidence  Unreliable people
 Help others  Forgetting key information
 Build relationships  Dealing with disabilities
 Improve leadership skills  Difficult people
Improve personal skills  Different types of personalities

We also have to evaluate ourselves against this rating card to work out what type of mentor we are likely to be:

Good Ok Need to improve
Calm under pressure  *
Self-confident  *
Can create an atmosphere of trust and openess  *
Reliable  *
Non -judgemental  *
Approachable and friendly  *
Like public speaking  *

From this it is clear that I have some strong qualities but there are some areas that need to be improved in order for me to progress and develop as well as room to always improve on everything else.

Here are some of the barriers to being a good mentor:

•Fear of the unknown
•Lack of information / misinformation
•Miscommunication
•Fear of failure
•Fear of looking stupid
•Strong peer pressure
•Lack of trust
•Reluctance – not that bothered
•Absence
And here is how you are likely to overcome these barriers:

•Building a rapport with your mentees
•Be a Role model
•Bonding with group
•Offer guidance
•Enable Problem solving
•Be prepared
•Have a sense of purpose
I think being a mentor means you need to be quite a strong person, someone that can keep it together, works well under pressure yet is approachable and able to draw the line when things get to personal. You have to be able to keep a good balance between being friendly and approachable and being someone who offers support and guidance, you can’t allow yourself to get to involved as this may end up becoming very complicated. For example Teacher and Student, you and your teacher can be friendly but you are not best friends and there are certain ways to address them and lines that you don’t cross such as asking about their personal life.
