A304MC Pass it on – Mentoring Task 1

Task 1

1. Describe how you are feeling about becoming a student mentor
I am excited about becoming a student mentor, I have previously been a mentor at secondary school and really enjoyed the experience and the feeling you get from knowing that someone can come to you for help and advice. I love helping people and in my crowd of friends I’m always known as the mummy as everyone comes to me when they have a problem or need help, and they know that I will do whatever I can willingly and without judgement.
2. What are you hoping to gain from this experience?
I hope that through this experience my teaching skills will be built upon as in the future I hope to be in a role where I can pass my knowledge down in a clear and communicative way. I also hope that I learn something either from one of the other mentors or from the students, as everything is much more of an experience if both sides are benefiting and learning from each other. I hope that through this I inspire or encourage a student to work within broadcast media and further their knowledge and development in that platform.
3. Describe your worries/fears about mentoring?
I fear that a student will come to me and I won’t be able to help them with a problem, this would not only knock my confidence but this will knock the student and other student’s confidence in me. I also worry that because of the small age gap between L1 and L3 students we will not be taken seriously, however, if we are not listened to this may not hinder them as they will learn from their own mistakes, and then hopefully come back to us for help.
4. Imagine you are a mentor right now– what would be your strong point/s? What would be your weak points/

My strong points would be:
  • Patience.
  • Authoritativeness.
  • Helpfulness.

I tend to have a work hard play hard nature but only once the goal has been achieved, this can be a good way to work as it gives you something to work towards. I have no problem in delegating and getting in charge of a situation, and also have the patience to go over something many times as I know that not everyone is able to remember everything straight away, it can take time.

The only weakness I have is that I can led by distractions, however, not always so far that I cannot return to the job at hand.
